Sheri L. Brown - Of Counsel
Sheri Brown has been affiliated with Foote Meyers since November of 2009. Ms. Brown handles corporate litigation, specializing in breach of contract claims, as well as estate litigation and drafting contracts.
“I went to law school because I want to help people,” Brown said. “It is important to me to be a good listener and really get to the core issue that needs to be solved. Frequently, you can solve multiple issues and avoid future litigation if you look at a situation in a comprehensive way.”
After seeing a recurring problem with elderly people being taken advantage of financially by the use of joint bank accounts, Brown authored an article on the subject that was published in the DuPage County Bar Briefs. The article exposed elder financial abuse, often by family members, that occurs when an elderly person adds a person to their account to assist them with paying bills. Brown’s article suggested a new type of two-party convenience account that, unlike traditional joint accounts, would not grant ownership to the additional party named on the account. Illinois Senator Carol Pankau read Brown’s article and created legislation for a new statutory convenience account. Brown testified in Springfield in front of the Financial Institutions Committee and the proposed legislation became law on January 1, 2010 as 205 ILCS 720.
“It was a very rewarding experience to identify a problem, propose a solution, and have the solution become law in Illinois . It is a rare opportunity to directly impact an important issue and very gratifying to reduce the exploitation of the elderly.”
Brown graduated summa cum laude from Northern Illinois University College of Law as valedictorian. She was also a member of the Law Review Staff and received numerous honors, including the Academic Excellence Award, The McGough Prize for outstanding work in Corporate Law, and the Dean’s Merit Scholarship. Brown earned her undergraduate degree with honors from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in International Economics.
Brown is a member of the American Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar Association, the Kane County Bar Association and the DuPage County Bar Association. Brown is also on the Board of Directors of Purse of Hope, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping international victims of human trafficking.
